Introduction to Focusing-Oriented Expressive Arts (FOAT®) Self-Study, is approved for 3 Continuing Education (CE) hours as a Home-Study course.

To obtain a CE Certificate, participants must:

  • Complete Introduction to Focusing-Oriented Expressive Arts (FOAT®) Self-Study.
    • Requirements include: Watch all video lessons, read all written material/lessons, and complete and submit 3 documentation forms. Register for course to view full completion information.
  • Register for this CE course.
  • Complete the CE Test (70% passing grade; can retake) and CE Evaluation

How to Obtain CE Certificate

CE certificates will be issued upon completion of the main online course, Introduction to Focusing-Oriented Expressive Arts (FOAT®) Self-Study; CE Test with a passing grade of 70% or better; and completion of CE Evaluation. Must achieve 100% completion in both courses for CE Certificate.

Introduction to Focusing-Oriented Expressive Arts (FOAT®) Self-Study: Course Description

This course provides an introduction to Focusing-Oriented Expressive Arts (FOAT®) including its history and development, foundational principles, and main theoretical and practice approaches. Based on Eugene Gendlin’s evidence-based Focusing, this training includes learning the main concepts of Focusing Attitude, felt sense, symbol/handle, and felt shift.

The course demonstrates user-friendly expressive arts methods for expressing a felt sense and defines the following main approaches– FOAT Check-in, Theme-Directed FOAT, Clearing a Space with Arts, and Working on an Issue. Didactic presentations, experiential practice exercises and examples provide a rich, varied format for learning. 

This Self-Study format is based on the Live 2023 offering of Introduction to Focusing-Oriented Expressive Arts.

Course Cost: $95 (USD).

Course Content Level: Open to those new and experienced in Focusing, Expressive Arts, and FOAT!

Course Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the history of the development of Focusing-Oriented Expressive Arts developed by Dr. Laury Rappaport.
  2. Explain the history of Focusing developed by Eugene Gendlin and its research basis.
  3. Name the main concepts of Focusing: Focusing Attitude, felt sense, symbol/handle, and felt shift.
  4. List the foundational principles of FOAT®.
  5. Summarize the basic FOAT® step.
  6. State 3 FOAT® approaches in addition to the basic FOAT® step.


Satisfactory Completion for CEs: This offering is approved for 3 CE hours. Participants must have paid the course tuition fee and CE fee, and completed both online courses to 100% (includes passing CE test with 70% or higher score and submission of CE evaluation).
