Overview and Requirements

This course is approved for 27.5 Continuing Education (CE) hours through the Focusing and Expressive Arts Institute as an NBCC Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP No. 7596). You must have full attendance credit for all 10 Live Zoom Group Meetings to be eligible for CE Hours. 

  

How to Purchase CEs

  1. You must register for the course prior to the first Live Zoom Group Meeting on September 3, 2025. Click here to register. 
  2. The 27.5 CE credits are offered for a separate fee of $45. You may purchase them at any time– simple click on either of the "Click here to purchase CEs" buttons on this page.


How to Obtain CE Certificate

After the conclusion of the course, the Focusing and Expressive Arts Institute will process attendance and send a CE Evaluation to all that meet the attendance requirements. CE Certificates will be issued after submission of CE Evaluation. Please see Satisfactory Completion for CEs (below the Learning Objectives) to ensure you understand and are able to meet the requirements prior to registering for CEs.



Course Description

Level 2: FOAT Facilitation and Partnership Skills teaches the foundational skills for facilitating others in the main FOAT approaches learned in Level 1. Skills and methods include: FOAT Partnership, Compassionate Listening (Intermediate), Theme-Directed FOAT, FOAT Check-in, Clearing a Space with Arts, Inner Critic, FOAT with Steps, and Working on an Issue.
 
A core practice within Focusing and FOAT training programs is the Partnership. Trainees will rotate partners to practice facilitating the fundamental FOAT exercises learned in Level 1. Challenges and blocks to FOAT/Focusing will be addressed. The training includes didactic material, videos, readings, demonstrations, experiential practice, FOAT coaching and supervision.

Location: Online via Zoom.

Date and Time:  In Level 2, all ten Group Meetings will be held via Zoom.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the significance of having a FOAT Partner to develop facilitation skills.
  2. Describe the significance of having a FOAT Partner in order to have an embodied understanding of somatic processing with creative expression.
  3. Explain the roles in the FOAT Partner Practice: Focuser and Facilitator.
  4. Summarize the significance that the “Focuser” is in charge.
  5. List at least 3 components that are ethical to consider in a FOAT Partnership.
  6. Describe what Compassionate Listening is.
  7. Explain the importance of saying back both the verbal and nonverbal communication of clients.
  8. Summarize how to offer a listening response when clients have two different feelings.
  9. Explain how to integrate Compassionate Listening with expressive arts.
  10. Practice how to integrate Compassionate Listening with Focusing.
  11. Practice how to integrate Compassionate Listening with Focusing-Oriented Expressive Arts (FOAT®). 
  12. Demonstrate how to facilitate a FOAT® Check-in.
  13. Practice intermodal applications within FOAT exercises.
  14. Demonstrate how to facilitate Clearing a Space with the Arts- Directive Approach.
  15. Demonstrate how to facilitate Clearing a Space with the Arts- Nondirective Approach.
  16. Explain Demonstrate how to facilitate Clearing a Space with the Arts- Concrete Approach.
  17. Summarize how to facilitate Clearing a Space with the Arts- Hybrid Approach.
  18. Demonstrate how to facilitate at least 1 “FOAT with Steps” exercise.
  19. Summarize how to facilitate “Working on an Issue with the Arts.”
  20. State at least 1 challenge in using a script in facilitating FOAT.
  21. Explain what the “Inner Critic” is.
  22. State 1 FOAT exercise for “Transforming the Inner Critic” that can be applied to groups and individuals.
  23. Explain how to integrate “Dialogue” in working with the Inner Critic FOAT exercise.
  24. Name at least 2 strategies for working with the Inner Critic.
  25. List at least 3 strengths in the fundamental skills in Focusing-Oriented Expressive Arts.
  26. List 2 challenges in facilitating Focusing-Oriented Expressive Arts.


Satisfactory Completion for CEsThis offering is approved for 27.5 CE hours. Participants must have paid the CE fee, received attendance credit for all 10 Live Zoom Group Meetings, and completed a CE Evaluation in order to receive a CE Certificate. Full attendance credit is required (there is no partial CE).

  • Refunds for CE: Requests made prior to the submission of a CE Evaluation will be granted in full, minus an administrative/transactional fee (varies based on program CE cost and your regional tax).
